The Boingfire BFT4KB is a fanless, compact network appliance kit built for modern edge networking and security workloads. It combines the Boingfire BFT4 system board with a rugged black anodized aluminum enclosure to deliver a silent, always-on platform for firewalls, routers, SD-WAN, VPN, and IoT/edge gateways.
At its core, the system uses an Intel® Atom™ x5-E3940 quad-core processor and 4 GB onboard DDR4, providing stable, business-grade performance and efficiency for small and mid-size deployments. Four Intel I226-V 2.5GbE LAN ports give you multi-gig capability on every interface, ideal for high-speed internet, VLAN segmentation, and multi-WAN configurations.
This configuration ships with or without a pre-installed mSATA SSD, giving integrators and power users the freedom to choose their own storage capacity and brand. With 2 × full-size mSATA slots, you can add one or two SSDs, and even configure OS-level software RAID if required.
Beyond storage, the BFT4KB offers rich expansion options: 4 × Mini-PCIe slots, 1 × M.2 B-key slot for 4G/5G, and support for multiple SIMs make it easy to build cellular-enabled SD-WAN CPE, remote gateways, or multi-WAN edge routers.
Optimized for open-source platforms like OPNsense®, pfSense®, FreeBSD, and Linux-based firewall/router distributions, the BFT4KB is a natural choice for MSPs, OEMs, and advanced users who want a standardized, industrial-grade hardware platform they can fully customize.
Typical Use Cases
-
Open-Source Firewall / Router Appliance
Build an OPNsense®, FreeBSD, or Linux-based firewall/router with 2.5GbE ports, VLANs. -
SD-WAN / Multi-WAN Edge CPE
Add LTE/5G and Wi-Fi modules via Mini-PCIe and M.2, and leverage multiple SIMs to deliver resilient SD-WAN or branch connectivity. -
VPN Gateway / Remote Access Hub
Use the Intel® Atom™ x5-E3940 and AES-NI to terminate encrypted tunnels from branch sites or remote users, with storage sized according to your logging and policy needs. -
IoT / Industrial Edge Gateway
Combine Ethernet, serial, GPIO, and cellular connectivity to collect data, enforce security, and backhaul to the cloud or data center. -
MSP Standard CPE Platform
Preload your OS image, and deploy a consistent, brandable CPE fleet.
